Job Title: Geographic Information System Specialist
Department: Natural Resource Department
Hourly Rate: $15.00-17.00/hr Subject to grant funding
Exempt: No/Hourly
Supervisor: Environmental Specialist
Summary: The Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist will serve as resource to the Natural Resources Department in long range environmental and natural resource planning by using GIS to create and maintain spatial layers and associated databases.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities including the following:
Help maintain data and records.
Maintain and upgrade interactive webmaps using existing systems and developing new systems.
Integrate GIS and GPS resources across the NRD to facilitate data management and access; will process and manage GPS data gathered in the field; Will create GIS data and maps and provide analyses to support planning and conservation efforts at various scales.
Map development and other GIS and GPS processing to support NRD programs.
Monitor, maintain, and upgrade system; as needed and funds allow.
Maintain reservation land records and provide support to the Tribal Realty Program for land use mapping, acquisition efforts, and the mapping of tribal lease sites.
Update and maintain a well inventory database.
Will enhance and maintain the invasive species inventory and control database.
Will provide support to the Environmental Response Program in the development of a brownfield sites inventory.
Will develop, update, and educate staff on standard operating procedures for metadata, data-sharing agreements, data organization, and data maintenance.
Will develop a metadata protocol for the Department and maintain and create metadata for existing and newly created data.
Collect spatially-referenced field data, as needed.
Provide training to other NRD staff, as required.
Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
Required:
Minimum 2-year technical degree with 1 year job-related experience in cartography, computer science, natural resource science, or related field or 4-year B.S. degree in cartography, computer science, natural resource science, or related field.
Knowledge of computers, databases, coordinate geometry, digitizer and plotting operations. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity associated with on-site measurements.
Must be self-motivated, trustworthy, dependable, and willing to work long hours occasionally to meet deadlines.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred:
M.S. degree in cartography, computer science, natural resource science, or related field.
Experience with ArcGIS, website editing and creation, and illustration software.
Previous experience with grant writing.
Other Skills and Abilities:
This is a required driver position.
Must have a valid driver’s license and meet eligibility for tribal insurance.
Background Check:
This position is contingent on ability to pass background check required. This position requires a regular background check to be run.

Must be self-motivating.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
