Hey Everyone:

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Historic Preservation Dept. has just started using GIS and some of our first projects are to start GeoReferencing Historic Maps into Rasters so that we can use them as references for out Section 106 Requests.

I have three questions so far.

1.When laying my control points I try to place at least 6 points. 1 point on each corner and 2 points spaced in the center. I avoid grouping points. Is this a good default?

2. Should I use Auto Adjust in the Link Table? I don't really like it and prefer waiting till I get all my points down before I let it adjust.

3. After laying all my control points I have the option of some geometric transformations. I understand Polyorder1 (affine)and Spline. But I don't understand Polyorder2, Polyorder3, and Adjust. Would anyone like to explain each geometric transformation or provide a link for an explanation?

So far what I've looked at is the "Warp (Data Management)" page in the help as well as "Image Registration using ArcGIS 10.x. KnowGIS.com" on YouTube by KnowGIS.com.

Thank you

I think this is a good default. Depending on the Raster, I've been able to match up with as few as 2 points.

2. Should I use Auto Adjust in the Link Table? I don't really like it and prefer waiting till I get all my points down before I let it adjust.

I agree, the auto adjust is annoying. Sometimes it kicks in before I am ready and totally skews my raster. I prefer doing it manually.
