How do we address these structures that are used as homes for many people on the reservations across the country? By code, there are criteria that has to be met. We have so many people using these as their homes and is scary to think of when it comes to fires. As a fire dept. E911 GIS dept., we are trying to get answers from our leaders with no luck. We see these structures on some tribal lands here in Arizona, how is it allowed? The International Residential Code has this that make these noncompliant; R306.2 Requires every dwelling have a closet, lavatory and bathtub or shower. R306.2 Requires that every dwelling have a kitchen area with a sink. These buildings meet the code for space but the above codes make them noncompliant.
Any answers out there from tribes who have E911 in place. In real life, people do this because they can't afford a home or trailer, with the income on the tribes in most circumstances. I don't want to be a bad person and go around to tell people they can not live in these structures. On the other hand, what if?
